Overview
The United States Embassy in Tirana is the U.S. diplomatic mission in Albania, on Rruga Elbasanit in the southern part of the city. It is the main consular point of contact for U.S. citizens in Albania and processes visa applications for Albanian citizens travelling to the United States. Tirana International Airport (Rinas / Mother Teresa, TIA) is about 17 km north of the embassy and is the country's main international gateway.
Visa Services
The embassy processes the standard nonimmigrant visa categories for Albanian citizens — B-1/B-2 (business and tourism), F-1 (academic study), M-1 (vocational study), J-1 (exchange visitor), H-1B and L-1 (work and intracompany transfer), and others — alongside immigrant visa cases. Albanian passport holders need a visa to enter the United States; the embassy publishes wait times, fees and step-by-step instructions on al.usembassy.gov.
Consular Services
American Citizen Services (ACS) covers passport renewal and replacement, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA) for children of U.S. citizens born in Albania, notarial services for U.S. legal documents, and emergency assistance for U.S. citizens who are arrested, hospitalised, the victim of a crime, or in distress. The embassy operates a 24-hour emergency line for U.S. citizens with serious incidents.
Trade & Export Support
The U.S. Foreign Commercial Service desk works with American companies exporting to or operating in Albania. The country commercial guide and market briefings published by the U.S. Department of Commerce on trade.gov cover the main sectors active for U.S. exporters in Albania, including energy, ICT and infrastructure equipment.
Investment Opportunities
Albania actively promotes inbound investment in hydropower, solar and wind generation, tourism along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, agribusiness and ICT services. The embassy works with the Albanian Investment Development Agency (AIDA) on engagements between U.S. investors and Albanian counterparts.
Business Support
The Economic and Commercial Section is the embassy's contact point for U.S. companies seeking introductions to Albanian counterparts, market data, trade-event support and U.S. exporter advocacy. American companies can also engage through AmCham Albania, the U.S.-Albania bilateral chamber of commerce based in Tirana.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The embassy's Public Affairs Section runs the Fulbright Program for Albania (annual scholarships in both directions for students, scholars and English Teaching Assistants), the English Access Microscholarship Program for Albanian secondary-school students, and academic exchanges with U.S. universities. The American Corner network in Tirana, Shkodër and Vlorë provides public access to U.S. cultural and educational programming.
Appointment Information
Routine consular and visa services are by appointment only. Nonimmigrant visa applicants book through the consular appointment portal at usvisascheduling.com; American Citizen Services appointments are booked through al.usembassy.gov. Emergency consular services for U.S. citizens are available 24 hours via the embassy's emergency line.
Special Notes
U.S. passport holders can enter Albania visa-free for tourism for up to one year per visit; entry is via Tirana International Airport (TIA), the Adriatic ports of Durrës and Vlorë, or land borders with Greece, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro. The Albanian lek (ALL) is the local currency; ATMs are widely available in Tirana and other cities. The embassy publishes consular service updates and any local closures on al.usembassy.gov.
