Overview
The British embassy in Vilnius sits on Antakalnio at the eastern edge of the Old Town, close to the Vilnia river and the Antakalnis embassy quarter. It is the only UK diplomatic post in Lithuania. The visa-applicant traffic reaching this page is unusually concentrated for a country of Lithuania's size: the Lithuanian community in the UK is one of the largest non-British-Isles populations in the country, having grown sharply after Lithuania joined the EU in 2004 and consolidated again under the EU Settlement Scheme after Brexit. That demographic drives the dominant flows — settled-status family routes, dependants joining settled relatives, Skilled Worker routes, and student visas for graduates of Vilnius University, Kaunas University of Technology and Vilnius Tech heading to UK higher education. Applications are submitted online through UK Visas and Immigration on gov.uk; biometric enrolment is handled at the VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Vilnius.
The embassy is a working mission rather than a public visa-decision counter — UK visa decisions are made centrally by UKVI hubs. Day-to-day work is the diplomatic representation of the UK to Lithuania plus consular assistance for British nationals in the country, which has grown materially as a UK leisure-travel destination since the addition of direct routes from London Stansted, Luton and Manchester to Vilnius and Kaunas. Services include emergency travel documents for lost or stolen passports, notarial requests within the FCDO published scope, registration of births and deaths, and support after hospitalisation, arrest or bereavement.
Public access is by appointment only and routine queries are routed through the FCDO online enquiry form. British residents and short-stay visitors are encouraged to register their presence and to read the FCDO travel advice for Lithuania, particularly when travelling near the Belarus border or during winter months when conditions on regional roads change rapidly.
Visa Services
Lithuanian applicants for UK visas use the UKVI online application route on gov.uk for visit, study (Student and Child Student routes), Skilled Worker and other work routes, and family categories — including the EU Settlement Scheme family permit and routes for joining settled or pre-settled relatives. Applications are submitted and paid for online; biometrics are taken at the VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Vilnius. The Embassy itself does not accept visa applications or issue decisions — that work sits with UKVI decision-making teams.
Consular Services
The embassy serves British nationals in Lithuania, with priority on emergencies and people in vulnerable circumstances. Services include emergency travel documents for lost, stolen or expired passports; assistance after hospitalisation, arrest or detention; help following the death of a British national; notarial services within the FCDO published scope; and signposting to local English-speaking lawyers, doctors and translators. Routine passport renewals are handled through HM Passport Office online rather than at the embassy.
Service Area
The embassy covers the Republic of Lithuania, including Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys and the wider regions. There is no separate British consulate elsewhere in the country.
Appointment Information
All in-person services are by appointment. Initial contact is via the FCDO online enquiry form linked from the embassy's gov.uk page; the 24-hour FCDO emergency number serves British nationals needing urgent consular help. Walk-in attendance is not offered.
