Overview
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are remote, uninhabited volcanic islands in the Southern Ocean. As an external territory of Australia, they fall under the diplomatic responsibility of the German Embassy in Canberra.
Special Notes
Access to the islands is heavily restricted and requires a permit from the Australian Antarctic Division. There is no population and no infrastructure. These islands are a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected for their pristine environment and scientific value.
