The Consulate General of France in Kolkata is France's career post for eastern and north-eastern India, located at 21C Raja Santosh Road in the heritage Alipore residential and diplomatic district of southern Kolkata. The post serves West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and the seven sister states (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura), plus Sikkim. The Kolkata CG also coordinates the substantial Franco-Bengali cultural cooperation programme through the Alliance Française du Bengale — founded in 1948, one of the oldest Alliance Française operations in Asia and a substantial cultural institution in Kolkata's heritage cultural landscape. The Franco-Bengali cultural relationship has unusual depth: 19th- and early-20th-century Bengali intellectual life had substantial French exposure (Rabindranath Tagore's relationship with French philosophy and literature, the Bengali Renaissance's engagement with French ideas, the Brahmo Samaj's contact with French universalism), and the modern Franco-Bengali academic and artistic exchange continues this tradition through joint cultural projects, the substantial flow of Bengali students to French universities and the substantial French academic presence at Jadavpur University, the University of Calcutta and the broader eastern Indian university system. The eastern Indian commercial relationship with France is more modest but growing — Tata Steel's Jamshedpur cooperation with French steel-industry equipment suppliers, the substantial French aerospace-and-defence industrial cooperation with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Bangalore which reaches into the eastern Indian supplier base, and the substantial Franco-Bengali educational mobility.

The Consular Section serves the French national community in eastern and north-eastern India — registered French residents are concentrated in Kolkata (the French business and cultural community, the Alliance Française staff, the Institut Français en Inde Kolkata branch), Jamshedpur (the smaller French steel-industry community), and the substantial French academic and NGO community across the eastern states. Standard French consular services include passport renewal, civil-status notification, voter registration, notarial certifications, apostille issuance and emergency consular assistance for French nationals across the substantial catchment. The catchment is geographically large and includes the eastern Himalayan trekking destinations (Sikkim, Darjeeling) where French tourist consular emergencies occasionally arise.

The Franco-Bengali cultural relationship is the central anchor of the Kolkata post. Alliance Française du Bengale, founded in 1948 — one of the oldest Alliance Française operations in Asia — operates a substantial cultural programme including French-language teaching at one of the highest levels in India, the Alliance Française Film Festival, the substantial Franco-Bengali literary-and-translation programme (Bengali is one of the most translated Indian languages into French given the long historical Franco-Bengali intellectual exchange), Bharatanatyam and Indian classical music programming at French cultural venues, and the substantial Franco-Bengali academic cooperation with Jadavpur University, the University of Calcutta and IIT Kharagpur. The Indian student-mobility flow from the eastern Indian university system to French grandes écoles and universities is substantial.
