West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim and the seven sister states of the north-east (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura) — a geographically very large catchment that includes the eastern Himalayan trekking circuit and the Bodh Gaya Buddhist pilgrimage destination. France maintains three other Consulates General for the rest of India: Mumbai, Bangalore and Pondicherry.
The Alliance Française du Bengale in Kolkata, founded in 1948 and one of the oldest Alliance Française operations in Asia, is operationally coordinated with the Consulate General as part of the substantial Franco-Bengali cultural cooperation programme. The Alliance Française runs French-language teaching at one of the highest levels in India, the Alliance Française Film Festival, the Franco-Bengali literary-and-translation programme (Bengali is one of the most translated Indian languages into French) and the substantial cultural-and-academic exchange. The historical Franco-Bengali intellectual relationship dates back to the 19th-century Bengali Renaissance.
Typical processing is 15 calendar days from the day the file arrives at the Consulate General from the VFS Kolkata centre. Peak-season demand from March to June (European summer travel) extends the timeline, sometimes to 20–25 calendar days, and applications requiring additional documentation can run longer. Applications from the more remote north-eastern states may face slightly longer end-to-end timelines because of the courier transit to Kolkata.
