National Museum, New Delhi

India's national museum, on Janpath at the foot of Rajpath — the country's largest single repository of subcontinental art and archaeology. The collection runs from the Harappan civilisation (the Dancing Girl of Mohenjo-daro), through Buddhist and Jain bronzes, Mughal miniatures and the Tanjore school, to the Central Asian textiles from Aurel Stein's Silk Road expeditions and the Sharan Rani Bāckliwal sarod and music-instrument collection.
