Overview
The Embassy of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in Berlin is Bolivia's principal diplomatic mission in Germany and the hub of its Central European consular network. Germany has been one of Bolivia's most important European partners for over sixty years, with state development cooperation dating back to 1962 and implemented through GIZ, KfW and PTB. Bilateral trade centres on Bolivian mineral exports — lead, tin and silver ores account for the bulk of shipments to Germany — alongside agricultural goods such as Brazil nuts, coffee, quinoa and soy. Germany supplies machinery, optical instruments and vehicles in return. The cultural relationship runs equally deep: German schools in La Paz and Santa Cruz have operated for roughly a century, the Goethe-Institut La Paz has been active for over sixty years, and several German political foundations (Friedrich Ebert, Konrad Adenauer, Hanns Seidel) maintain country offices. The embassy serves the entire federal territory for diplomatic and consular matters and is supported by honorary consulates in Hamburg, Königstein (Hesse) and Munich.
Visa Services
The consular section processes visa applications for German citizens and residents travelling to Bolivia. Requirements vary by purpose of travel — tourist, business, work or study — and applicants should verify current regulations on the embassy website or the Bolivian MFA visa portal before submitting documents. The embassy also handles legalisation and apostille services for documents destined for use in Bolivia.
Consular Services
The embassy provides a full range of consular services to Bolivian nationals in Germany: passport issuance and renewal, civil registry (birth, marriage, death registration), notarial services, legalisation of documents, SEGIP identity services and consular protection. A dedicated MyConsulate mobile app is available for appointment scheduling and service tracking.
Trade & Export Support
Bolivia exports primarily mineral raw materials and agricultural products to Germany. The embassy facilitates contact between Bolivian exporters and German importers and promotes Bolivia at trade fairs. Key German development cooperation focus areas — renewable energy, sustainable urban development, Amazon forest protection and rural development — also create commercial opportunities for German firms with relevant expertise.
Investment Opportunities
Bolivia holds some of the world's largest lithium reserves in the Salar de Uyuni, alongside significant deposits of tin, silver, zinc, lead and natural gas. The embassy provides information on investment frameworks and connects prospective German investors with Bolivian authorities. Infrastructure, renewable energy and agribusiness are priority sectors.
Business Support
The embassy assists entrepreneurs and businesses from both countries with guidance on Bolivia's legal and regulatory environment, facilitates introductions to chambers of commerce and government agencies, and supports German firms participating in Bolivian tenders and projects.
Cultural & Educational Programs
Bolivia's cultural presence in Germany is anchored by the century-old German schools in La Paz and Santa Cruz and the long-standing Goethe-Institut programme. The embassy organises and participates in cultural events, film screenings and exhibitions showcasing Bolivia's indigenous heritage, textile traditions, music and contemporary art. Academic exchanges are supported through the DAAD and the Weltwärts and Kulturweit volunteer programmes.
Service Area
The embassy's jurisdiction covers the entire Federal Republic of Germany. Honorary consulates in Hamburg (covering Hamburg, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein), Königstein (Hesse and Thuringia) and Munich (Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg) provide additional consular support in their respective regions.
Appointment Information
Appointments can be scheduled through the embassy website or the MyConsulate app. The consular section operates Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00. For emergencies outside office hours, contact the embassy's main number.
